Initiatives by the Prevention Coalition carried out in The Hague district of Moerwijk have shown that a strong social basis in the community is vital for addressing discrepancies in health outcomes. That demands a full-spectrum approach in cooperation with residents. A long-term vision for financing and embedding of this 'community up' approach are also needed.

We are pleased to see that this call has been heard by the State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport Maarten van Ooijen in conversations with Wendy Broeders of community chamber Heeswijkplein 10Willem Bakker of Gewoon Sociaal and Jamila Choukoud of the Moerwijk Mothers.

He also spoke with life expert and community pastor Bettelies Westerbeek. Together with community organiser Marc van Bergen and psychotherapist Omar van Ommeren, she is working on boosting mental health, designing custom-tailored community assistance, and improving the cooperation between informal and formal aid.

He visited the initiatives with Jet Bussemaker, at the invitation of Healthy and Happy The Hague and the Council of Public Health & Society (RVS).
